Uncovering Secrets of Mars

Advertisements

NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover took a photo of a rock called “Cheyava Falls” on July 18, 2024. The rock has white veins and reddish bands, which suggest the presence of minerals like hematite. Scientists are interested in the small, light-colored spots on the rock, which are surrounded by dark rings. These spots might have formed when chemical reactions changed the rock’s color and released iron and phosphate, which could support microbial life. The rover found Cheyava Falls in an ancient riverbed on Mars and took a sample of the rock to study further. The rock also contains green olivine crystals, which formed in lava flows, but scientists don’t know yet when they formed in relation to the spots.
